The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Explains Its Use of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity
The team behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its next major project, generating immense hype within the player base. However, follow-up remarks from the company's co-founder have brought nuance to the discussion, addressing the studio's approach toward machine learning.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a recent clarification, Larian's director explained that the team is employing AI technology for particular supporting functions. These include developing PowerPoint slides, creating rough artistic references, and drafting temporary copy.
Notably, Vincke made clear that the end material in the game will be created solely by actual creatives. "We are developing every line ourselves," he stated.
Larian is constantly expanding our team of concept artists and are busily forming writing teams.
Given that concept art is being particularly mentioned — we presently have over twenty concept artists and have job openings for more talent.
Each initiative we do is supplementary and aimed at enabling creatives to spend greater focus on the creative process.
Any ML tool implemented properly is additive to a artist's process, not a replacement for their skill.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The revelation of employing this technology at first generated unease among portions of the fanbase. In reaction, Vincke provided further elaboration on social media.
"We use AI tools to explore references, in the same way we use Google and reference books," he explained. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then swap out with original illustrations."
He continued, "Our studio recruits artists for their creative vision, not for their capacity to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had previously outlined the team's targeted approach to this technology, defining its use into primary areas:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes polishing mocap data, voice editing, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to speedily create simple versions of scenarios to experiment with concepts before complete production.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how machine learning could eventually enhance new forms of gameplay, especially in creating dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.
He specifically affirmed that core creative areas — such as visual art — are are in no way fields where the studio is reducing creative input. In fact, Larian is actively hiring in these very roles.
"Our studio is neither shipping a game with AI-generated content, nor planning on cutting staff to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
