Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unneeded gifts can be seen as a little discourteous – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment could include objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Italian auction firm. A date has not been finalized, but the intention is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds going to various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
The items are currently kept in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away for years.
The detailed catalog remains disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
An International Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her allies, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
This unique auction symbolizes a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
