Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
