Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen people got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away subsequent to the incident was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene displayed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the blast, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
