Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
